Glock 31 handguns are recoil operated except for the model that is chambered in 9x17 -.380ACP, and they have locked breech pistols. They feature Browning-type linkless locking system with a barrel interlocking with slide via ejection port. All Glocks feature patented Safe Action striker-fired trigger mechanism. By now, Glock handguns are on their fourth generation with updates centered on ergonomics and the recoil spring assembly. These models do not have total parts modularity with its predecessors, meaning not all parts can be mixed and matched with previous Glock generations. Glock developed this compact model of Model 20 in 10 mm Auto caliber in 1997 and introduced it on the market as Model 29. The slide is 21 mm (7/8 in) shorter and the height is only 113 mm (4 ½ in). In order to retain the reasonable magazine capacity of 10 rounds, the width remained the same as in the large model, viz., .32.5 mm (1 ¼ in). The total length of this compact pistol is 172 mm (6 ¾ in). The barrel length is 96 mm (3 ¾ in). The barrel has a hexagonal profile with a right-hand twist of 250 mm (10 in). The empty weight is 700 g (24 ½ oz). In 1998, Glock introduced a number of models in the new .357 Sig caliber. This cartridge was developed by the Swiss SIG arms factory. The caliber is based on a .40 S&W cartridge case with a compressed shoulder for a 9 mm bullet. Several other ammunition factories are now also making cartridges in this caliber. A bullet of 125 grains (8.1g) achieves a muzzle velocity of 412 m/s (1350 fps) and a muzzle energy of 688 Joules. The Czech ammunition manufacturer Sellier & Bellot even makes this caliber with a full mantle jacket bullet of 149 grains (9.1 g). This also has a muzzle velocity of 412 m/s (1350 fps) and a muzzle energy of 764 Joules. The total length of Model 31 is 186 mm ( 7 ¼ in). The barrel has a length of 114 mm (4 ½ in) and a hexagonal profile with a right-hand twist of 406 mm (16 in). The height of the weapon is 138 mm (5 ½ in), and the empty weight is 660 g (32 ¼ oz). The standard magazine capacity is 15 rounds and with a special magazine can even be increased to 17 rounds. Glock also provided this pistol with built-in compensator as Model 31C.
