The Glock 17, or G17, as the pistol is also known, was developed in1980 by the Austrian engineer, Gston Glock. In 1982, the Austrian army chose the Glock 17 as its service pistol. The weapon only became popular in the USA in 1985. When the Miami Police Department introduced Model 17 as its weapon in 1987, many other American police departments followed their example, such as the NYPD in New York in 1989. As indicated in the introduction, the Glock 17 has a double action only trigger. This is descripted by Glock as a safe-action system. The model number 17 is related to the magazine capacity, viz., 17 rounds in 9 mm Para caliber. With a special magazine, this capacity can even be increased to 19 rounds. In North America, the magazine capacity is restricted by law to10 rounds. The total length of the Glock 17 is a186 mm (7 ¼ in), the barrel length is 114mm (4 ½ in) and it has a hexagonal profile with a right- hand twist of 250 mm (9 ¾ in). The height of the weapon is 138 mm (5 ½ in), and its width is only 30 mm (1in). The empty weight of the pistol is 625 g (22 oz). The standard trigger pressure is 2500 g (5 ½ lb). However, some American police department wanted a heavier trigger pressure. Glock therefore developed an interchangeable set of 3600 g (8 lb). In 1990, the New York Police Department (NYPD) requested a modified trigger action which was to be like that of a double action revolver. Glock responded promptly and designed the New York trigger spring. It seems that the New Yorkers still considered this too tight because it was followed one year later by the New Yorker Two trigger action with a trigger pressure of 5440g (12 lb). Glock has two different models for training purposes. Model 17 T in 9 mm FX caliber shoots 9 mm rounds filled with paint, or 9 mm cartridges with a rubber round. The frame of this model is bright blue. In addition, there is the 17T 7.8 x 21 AC pistol, which works with replaceable air pressure cartridges, which can also shoot rubber or paint rounds. This weapon has a bright red frame.
